A District Committed to Long-Term Sustainability

Township High School District 113, located in the northern suburbs of Chicago, serves a thriving student community across multiple high school campuses. Faced with aging infrastructure and increasing energy demands, the district saw an opportunity to invest in high-impact solutions that would reduce operating costs, improve indoor comfort, and support long-term sustainability goals.

To turn that vision into action, the district partnered with Performance Services to develop and implement a series of comprehensive facility improvement projects designed to deliver measurable, lasting results.

Strategic Improvements Across Multiple Phases

Together, the district and Performance Services completed three carefully coordinated projects that focused on energy conservation, system reliability, and building performance—executed with minimal disruption to school operations.

Project scope included:

  • Interior and exterior LED lighting upgrades at Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools, improving visibility and reducing energy usage

  • Repair of steam boilers at Highland Park High School to extend system life and improve performance

  • Replacement of 10 rooftop units (RTUs) at Deerfield High School, reconfigured to a variable air volume (VAV) system for enhanced comfort and ventilation control

  • Installation of roof-mounted solar systems at both Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools, delivering a combined capacity of 2.6 MW of renewable energy

High Returns Through Smart Investments

By aligning infrastructure improvements with long-term capital planning, the district was able to significantly offset project costs and generate substantial value through multiple incentive streams:

  • $6,108,731 in projected 20-year energy savings

  • $672,500 in rebates

  • $2,349,790 in estimated solar renewable energy credit (SREC) income

  • $2,982,261 in one-time savings from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)

These improvements not only reduce reliance on traditional energy sources but also position the district as a leader in sustainable facility management.

A Sustainable Path Forward

Township High School District 113 has proven that strategic facility investments can yield measurable results—both financially and environmentally. Through thoughtful planning and smart implementation, the district has created more efficient, more comfortable, and more sustainable schools that will benefit students and the community for years to come.
