Planning for Growth Without Compromising the Student Experience
Westfield is one of the fastest-growing communities in the Midwest, and Westfield Washington Schools has experienced two decades of sustained enrollment growth. Rather than simply adding capacity, district leaders developed a long-range facilities strategy that preserves the high-quality educational experience families expect while preparing for future generations of students.
As part of the district’s Destination Westfield initiative, Westfield Washington Schools is transforming existing facilities to create learning environments intentionally designed for each stage of a student’s educational journey. The project includes reimagining Westfield Intermediate School into Cool Creek Elementary, the district’s eighth elementary school, while renovating and expanding the existing Westfield Middle School to create a second middle school campus that delivers the same educational experience for all students in grades 6-8.
Creating Learning Environments Designed for Every Age
The project goes far beyond renovating buildings—it creates schools intentionally designed around how students learn and grow.
Cool Creek Elementary has been thoughtfully redesigned to provide a welcoming, developmentally appropriate environment for young learners. The renovation includes student collaboration spaces, flexible classrooms, a new library media center, and age-appropriate classroom furnishings. Outdoor improvements feature the district’s largest elementary playground, complete with dedicated play zones for different age groups. Kindergarten students will benefit from a dedicated play area with age-appropriate structures and surfaces that promote fine- and gross-motor development in a secure, imaginative setting.
The district also incorporated significant improvements to traffic circulation and parent drop-off areas, creating safer, more efficient arrival and dismissal experiences for students and families.
Supporting a Seamless Middle School Experience
At the same time, the existing Westfield Middle School is being renovated to mirror the educational programming and student experience offered at the district’s newly constructed second middle school. The renovation includes adding the sixth-grade program, previously at the intermediate school, to accommodate grades 6-8.
The project creates additional classrooms and collaborative learning spaces while modernizing shared student areas to support consistent educational opportunities for all middle school students. Together, the two campuses will enable Westfield Washington Schools to better balance enrollment while maintaining the high standards synonymous with the district.
Building for the Future
Construction is expected to be completed in phases, with Cool Creek Elementary opening for elementary students in Fall 2026 and the broader facilities improvements continuing through Fall 2027.
By reimagining existing facilities rather than starting from scratch, Westfield Washington Schools is maximizing prior investments while creating modern learning environments that support enrollment growth, foster collaboration, and prepare students for success for years to come. The result is more than renovated buildings—it’s a long-term investment in the future of one of Indiana’s fastest-growing communities.
