Carlisle, KY. Nicholas County Schools (NCS) is pleased to announce that its recent energy efficiency initiative has exceeded expectations by delivering $67,077 in annual energy savings during its first year of operation—surpassing the original projection of $53,852 by nearly 25%. The project, completed in March 2024 by the accredited energy service company Performance Services, Inc. (PSI), represents a significant step forward in the district’s commitment to reducing operational costs and creating an optimal learning environment for students.
Major upgrades included installation of new water-source heat pumps, outside air units, and a state-of-the-art variable refrigerant flow HVAC system. In addition, the district upgraded to energy-efficient LED lighting, enhanced the building automation system, improved the building envelope, and made important telecommunications upgrades. Other improvements were rooftop unit replacements, installation of electric cabinet unit heaters, and exhaust fan replacements.
These measures collectively improved the district’s learning environment and reduced the district’s energy intensity by 14%, yielding substantial operational savings. The upgrades were implemented across several key facilities, including the Middle and High School, Elementary School, Board Office, Bus Garage, and Central Storage buildings.
“From the beginning, our goal in partnering with Performance Services has been to create systems, particularly HVAC and lighting, that improve the learning environment for our students without a cost to our local taxpayers,” said Nicholas County Superintendent Doug Bechanan. “Now that we are surpassing our energy reduction targets, not only does it mean we have new systems in place, it means more of our dollars can go back into our classrooms and directly to our students, where they matter most.”
When Nicholas County Schools opens its doors for the 2025-26 school year, students and staff will return to a transformed learning environment. These enhancements reflect the district’s ongoing dedication to providing safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient spaces that support academic excellence and community well-being.
