Ground Breaking at Westfield Washington Cool Creek

Westfield Washington Schools broke ground on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, marking the beginning of Westfield Intermediate School’s (WIS) transformation into Cool Creek Elementary School. Construction will be completed in phases over the next two summers, aligning with the district’s plan to gradually transition sixth-grade students out of the building. This approach allows WIS to complete the current school year with minimal disruption while preparing for its future as an elementary school.

The groundbreaking signals a new chapter for the historic site, reimagining it as a vibrant, child-centered K–5 school designed to serve the district’s youngest learners. The converted facility will include collaborative learning spaces, flexible classrooms, and a modern library media center that fosters curiosity, creativity, and connection.

Beyond the classroom, outdoor spaces will be significantly enhanced to provide safe, engaging play environments and designated zones tailored to different age groups and activities. Kindergarten students will benefit from a dedicated play area with age-appropriate structures and surfaces that promote fine and gross motor development in a secure, imaginative setting.

“It’s exciting to see this building begin a new chapter as the district’s newest elementary school,” said Andy Hilton, Principal of Cool Creek Elementary. “The updates, including the newly completed media center and this soon-to-be renovated playground, are creating welcoming spaces where our students will learn, grow, and thrive for years to come.”

The project also includes improved traffic flow and dedicated drop-off and pick-up zones to reduce congestion and enhance safety for families.

Superintendent Dr. John Atha reflected on the project’s long-term impact, stating, “These improvements reflect our commitment to strategically prepare our schools to serve students well into the future. This updated space will soon be transformed into the perfect place for young learners to begin their journey toward becoming Life Ready.”

Upon completion, Cool Creek Elementary will become the district’s eighth K–5 school, reflecting Westfield Washington Schools’ continued commitment to thoughtful growth and high-quality learning environments.
