A Gym That Deserved More
At Lithonia Middle School, the gym wasn’t just a space for athletics; it was a daily hub for student activity, school spirit, and community events. But the existing lay-in tile ceiling was showing its age. It lacked durability, didn’t reflect the space’s energy, and was often damaged by the very activities it was meant to support. The lighting was outdated, and the overall look felt more like a classroom than a high-use athletic facility.
DeKalb County Schools recognized the opportunity to enhance the space, not just for appearances, but to create a more durable, modern, and engaging environment for students.
A Strategic Makeover for Performance and Style
With a vision to elevate the space while maximizing function, the district launched a gym ceiling replacement project that went far beyond a surface-level fix.
The original tile ceiling and outdated 2×4 lighting were removed entirely. New ductwork was installed to improve airflow, and the lighting was upgraded to high-performance fixtures that illuminate the space better. Instead of replacing the drop ceiling, the team opted for a bold, modern solution: painting the exposed ceiling and infrastructure black to create an industrial-style look that adds depth and energy to the gym.
The result is a space that feels fresh, intentional, and built for activity—offering both durability and design that supports the school’s vibrant programs.
A Smart Investment in Student Experience
With a contract totaling $1,070,083, this project reflects DeKalb County Schools’ commitment to thoughtful, student-centered improvements. Completion is expected by August 2025, ensuring that future classes of students will enjoy a gym that not only performs better but also looks and feels like a space designed for champions.
