Challenge
Socorro ISD was in need of facility improvements to enhance the learning environment and improve energy efficiency. However, the district faced challenges like tight budgets, outdated equipment, and a compressed assessment timeline. To meet their needs the district partnered with Performance Services to implement a two-phase project.
Solution
The phase 1 project aimed at modernizing the lighting systems in three school buildings (Captain Walter E. Clark Middle School, Colonel John O. Ensor Middle School, and Montwood High School). The project involved replacing all interior and exterior lighting with energy-efficient LEDs. Our team used 360-degree cameras to capture building data accurately and efficiently.
Running concurrently with the lighting upgrades, the phase II project included a controls retrofit and HVAC upgrades to improve energy efficiency and comfort in four school buildings (Ernesto Serna Fine Arts Academy, Socorro Middle School, Salvador H. Sanchez Middle School, and Colonel John O. Ensor Middle School). This project involved replacing three rooftop units for the gym at Colonel John Ensor Middle School, upgrading lighting systems, and modernizing the control systems to match the rest of the campus.
Results
The new lighting cut energy costs and boosted student and staff morale. Both teachers and students appreciated the brighter learning spaces. The upgraded HVAC systems provided consistent cooling for the gym, resolving previous humidity and equipment issues. The new control systems improved management capabilities, operations, and energy efficiency. The project was completed within the scheduled time and budget, with the district receiving rebates for the energy-efficient upgrades.
