Steve Laatsch is a transformative educational leader dedicated to equipping future leaders and educators with the skills to thrive in an increasingly complex world. With over 30 years of experience, Steve has led Saline Area Schools to consistent Top 20 academic performance in Michigan while fostering a culture of innovation, equity, and community connection.
Beginning his career as a Middle School Science Teacher in Maryland, Steve returned to Michigan as an Elementary Teacher and Technology Instructor in Saline. His leadership journey progressed through roles as Elementary Assistant Principal, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, where he led district-wide curriculum development and instructional excellence.
Appointed Superintendent in 2021, Steve has spearheaded initiatives like the SAS Compass, blending life and academic skills, and the Bridge to Civility, fostering respectful community discourse. He expanded diverse hiring practices and inclusive curricular experiences to ensure every student feels valued and prepared for their future.
Steve was named 2023 Administrator of the Year by the Michigan Association of Secondary Theater Arts (MASTA) for his support of the performing arts. His leadership was also key in the successful passage of a $180 million bond, securing future-focused facilities and programs for Saline students.
Steve holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University, an M.S. in Educational Administration from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. in Elementary Education from Michigan State University.
Beyond his professional life, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife, a retired art teacher, and their two children. He finds balance and inspiration outdoors, enjoying walking, running, windsurfing, water skiing, and snow skiing.
From classroom teacher to superintendent, Steve’s career reflects his unwavering commitment to student success, educational innovation, and community building. His vision is clear: to cultivate future-ready leaders equipped to navigate and shape a better world.
