A Community Steps Up for Its School

In April 2023, voters in the Washington-Caldwell School District approved a much-needed referendum to breathe new life into their aging school facility. The community recognized the need to invest in a building that had served generations of students—and to ensure it could continue doing so safely, efficiently, and comfortably for decades to come.

With a clear mandate from local taxpayers, the District partnered with Performance Services to tackle complex infrastructure challenges, preserve key historical elements, and dramatically improve the learning environment.

Complex Challenges, Smart Solutions

This was not a simple renovation. The school presented several structural and mechanical challenges, including aging systems, tight mechanical spaces, and hazardous materials. Our integrated design and construction team developed a customized plan to upgrade key systems while preserving the school’s unique character.

Key improvements included:

HVAC & Mechanical Upgrades

  • Boiler plant upgrades to increase capacity and system reliability
  • Replacement of constant-volume air handling units with energy-efficient VAV systems
  • A new AHU with DX cooling fitted into a confined mechanical room, replacing a decades-old gas-fired multizone unit
  • New RTU installed to serve the gym and to add cooling
  • Nine VAV boxes installed and carefully coordinated within the same tight space—resulting in improved airflow and occupant comfort throughout the building
  • Installation of campus-wide BAS controls for smart energy management as well as improved comfort
  • Total of 27 VAV boxes installed
  • Replaced existing gas fired domestic water heaters

Lighting & Interior Enhancements

  • Full LED lighting upgrades across the campus
  • New corridor ceilings, offering a refreshed look and improved lighting quality
  • Partial window and door replacements to boost energy performance and security

Exterior & Envelope Improvements

  • Removal of old, asbestos-containing façade materials
  • Installation of new metal wall panels for improved weather resistance and aesthetics

Preserving History While Planning for the Future

Despite the modern upgrades, Performance Services worked carefully to preserve the school’s historic character:

  • The original wood-sided schoolhouse remains visible from the exterior
  • Completed brick tuckpointing to maintain the brick work

The Result: Comfort, Safety, and Lasting Community Pride

Today, Washington-Caldwell School District has a campus that not only performs better—but feels better. Students and staff benefit from improved comfort, air quality, and lighting, while the community can take pride in having honored the past while investing in the future. This project stands as a model of how thoughtful planning, technical expertise, and community engagement can come together to revitalize a school—and strengthen the district for generations to come.
