"We are very pleased that Topeka Elementary has earned the ENERGY STAR designation. Through the efforts of Barry McIntire and Maynard Mast, the HVAC system designed and installed by Performance Services is operating well. The energy savings means more money is available for educational programs and also helps our environment."
"An ownership attitude made a difference here. Our efficient equipment and digital controls are monitored and well managed by our facilities staff."
Topeka Elementary is distinguished as the northern most school in Indiana to achieve ENERGY STAR status. Utilizing Topeka digital controls to closely monitor facilities and optimize energy use during days, nights and weekends has paid off with recognition to the facilities staff and a savings contribution to the school district's general fund.
Room temperatures - installed new dual temp heating/cooling throughout the school, high efficiency boilers, variable speed pumps and 2-pipe system. Relief dampers installed with variable fan drives. A web-based digital controls system is effectively managed by facilities staff to maintain temperature within two degree of set point. Classroom teachers have flexibility to adjust temperature from 68 to 72 degrees for individual classroom comfort.
Indoor air quality - installed humidity and CO2 sensors in the renovated areas to ensure proper air quality.
Air distribution - installed new dual temp face and bypass unit ventilators in the classrooms and cafeteria.
Lighting - replaced existing lights and ballasts with T8 and electronic ballasts. Also installed LED exit signs. Replaced existing gym fluorescent lights with new T8 lights and electronic ballasts.
Air filtration - installed units have 2" filters for greater air filtration.
Air conditioning was added to Topeka Elementary and the school district still managed to reduce energy costs by $149,763 in a 3-year period of time and achieve ENERGY STAR status.
