John joined the Performance Services team in 2024. He is a dedicated educator and administrator who has devoted over thirty years to shaping students’ lives and contributing to the development of educational systems in Wisconsin.

A native of Northeast Iowa, John graduated from Winona State University in 1990 with a BS degree in education. Shortly after, John embarked on a rewarding career in education, beginning as a 5th-grade teacher at a private school in Mauston, Wisconsin. After two years, John moved to New Lisbon, Wisconsin, where he was hired as an intervention specialist. In this role, John worked with at-risk students, providing crucial support to help them succeed academically.

As his career progressed, John transitioned into teaching physical education and health, later also teaching special education to middle school students. His ability to connect with students of various needs and backgrounds made him a respected and admired figure in the New Lisbon school district.

In 2004, John took a brief hiatus from education to pursue a career in real estate and mortgage brokering. During this time, he started his own mortgage and real estate companies. However, the economic downturn in 2008 led to the collapse of the housing market, prompting John to return to the field of education.

Determined to make a broader impact in education, John returned to school to earn a master’s degree in educational administration and leadership. This academic achievement paved the way for his new role as the principal of Southwestern Elementary and Middle School in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, where he was able to implement positive changes and improve student outcomes.

After four years as principal, John was appointed superintendent of the district, a position in which he served for the next nine years. As superintendent, John was instrumental in guiding the district through key challenges, fostering a collaborative environment, and ensuring that educational resources were effectively allocated to meet the needs of students and staff. Some highlights of John’s success were passing a $10 million referendum for upgrades and a new middle school wing added to the high school. A couple of years later, another referendum was passed for a brand new athletic field complex with an 8-lane track, turf football field, and new baseball and softball fields.

John retired in July 2024 after a distinguished career in education spanning over 30 years. Throughout his career, John remained committed to fostering educational opportunities for all students and helping schools navigate the changing landscapes of both local and national education systems.
