About ENERGY STAR

The Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy first began ENERGY STAR in 1992 as a voluntary rating program to promote energy efficient products that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 1995, the program was expanded to include non-residential buildings, including schools.

Currently there are more than 1,000 ENERGY STAR labeled K-12 buildings in the United States.  Performance Services implemented a Guaranteed Energy Savings Contract (GESC) and supported the school district to achieve ENERGY STAR certification in 30 school buildings with still more buildings being evaluated for qualification. For perspective, less than 2% of K-12 school buildings in the United States have achieved ENERGY STAR certification.

The opportunity to be recognized as an ENERGY STAR building is good for the school district, for taxpayers and creates additional energy related learning opportunities for students, teachers and staff. Achieving the ENERGY STAR rating also means a school consumes far less energy, emits fewer greenhouse gases, and enjoys energy cost savings—directly translated into benefitting both the community and the environment.

ENERGY STAR Partner

Dedicated to promoting sustainable building design, Performance Services is proud to be an ENERGY STAR Partner and the leading GESC service provider of ENERGY STAR rated K-12 schools in the State of Indiana. Each year we utilize EPA’s Portfolio Manager for buildings considered High Efficiency to determine the ENERGY STAR rating and report savings and energy usage trends to customers based on collected energy data. If a school building achieves a score of 75 or higher after 12 months of data collection, we complete the EPA Statement of Performance for certification by our professionally licensed energy engineer and approval by the school.

Throughout each year, our Performance Assurance dedicated staff monitors the energy utility usage and digital control settings of our customer buildings and reviews the level of energy efficiency. An annual savings report is also prepared and provided to our customers with a presentation to the school board. We work collaboratively with customers to offer insight and new ideas for increasing energy efficiency and reducing operating costs.

To check the energy usage and estimated efficiency of your school building, we invite you to take our building assessment challenge. To learn more about ENERGY STAR, click on the ENERGY STAR 2008 Snapshot report or visit www.energystar.gov.
