Wind energy is emerging as one of the most significant sources of renewable energy in the 21st century. Investment in wind energy in the Uniited States has surged over the last decade. In 2001, there was just 4,000 mega-watts (MW's) of installed wind generating capacity in the country, a figure that grew to more than 34,000 MW's by 2009. Electricity from wind is about 83-percent cheaper than it was 30 years ago and can be generated for about 5-cents per kilowatt-hour (kwh), making it cost-competitive with coal-powered electricity.
Indiana is no exception to the nationwide wind energy boom. Indiana's ease of access to major highways, adequate transmission line capacity and proximity to large load centers has and will continue to attract wind projects to Indiana and further reinforce Indiana as the "Crossroads of America."
